Varicose veins are a common surgical problem. Patients can present with a groin swelling due to a Saphena varix. This is a grossly dilated great saphenous vein which occurs before it goes through the saphenous opening. Weakness of the valves leads to progressive dilatation of the veins leading to varicose veins.
This is an intraoperative picture taken during a long saphenous vein surgery. Meticulous dissection is needed since the wall of the varix is thin.
